Chapter 3: Understanding the Concepts of Research

2.1 Definition of Research

Research is a systematic and methodical process of enquiry and investigation normally undertaken by business organizations or academic institutions. Generally the purpose of  research is to provide possible solutions to a problem  and to generate new knowledge by reviewing and synthesizing existing knowledge. In order to produce reliable and valid research findings, research must be conducted thoroughly and rigorously at all stages. Besides,  It must be conducted in an organized and systematic manner.

2.2 Research Paradigm

According to Hussey & Hussey(1997), the term paradigm refers to the progress of scientific practice based on people's assumptions and philosophies about our world and the nature of knowledge; and about how the research should be conducted. The paradigm offers a framework comprising an accepted set of theories, methods and ways of defining data. According to Morgan(1979), research paradigm can be applied to three different aspects, namely the philosophical aspect where it is about the basic beliefs in the world, the social aspect where it provides a set of rules on how a researcher should undertake his or her research and the technical aspect where it specifies the methods and techniques that are used to conduct research.

Generally there are two main research paradigms, namely the positivist paradigm and the phenomenological paradigm. There are many research approaches that can be categorized under these two paradigms, they can be summarized in the table below:

Positivistic Paradigm Phenomenological paradigm
Quantitative Qualitative
Objectivist Subjectivist
Scientific Humanistic
Experiment Interpretivist
Traditionalist
